Bangladesh Violence: Violence broke out in Bangladesh once again. Clashes between agitators and supporters of the ruling party over quota in government jobs turned violent. More than a hundred people died in these incidents. Hundreds were injured. Due to this, the government has imposed an indefinite curfew across Bangladesh. The Students Against Discrimination organization demands that Sheikh Hasina step down from the post of Prime Minister. Violent situations have prevailed across Bangladesh for a month due to the reservation amendment agitations. Agitators are destroying government property and burning vehicles. As a result, the Bangladeshi government stopped internet services and imposed restrictions on social media. Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram have been banned.

91 people were killed in the violent incidents on Sunday and hundreds were injured. Deaths are occurring across the country, including the northern districts of Bangladesh, Bogra, Pabna and Rangpur. More than 280 people have died in reservation agitations for a month. Over 10,000 people have been detained by security forces in the last two weeks. Among those arrested were students and supporters of the Bangladesh opposition party. Bangladeshi police are cracking down on protesters.

The July reservation agitation started with the demand of canceling the 30 percent reservation in government jobs for the families of those who died in the 1971 Bangladesh-Pakistan war. Bangladesh’s main opposition BNP asked people not to pay taxes and consumer bills, stop public transport, close all factories and not attend work. Currently Awami League party is in power in Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasina was elected Prime Minister for the fourth time in January.
The Indian Embassy has alerted the Indian citizens there in the wake of the latest situation in Bangladesh. Indian citizens and students under Indian Assistant High Commission are advised to keep in touch with their office. 10,000 students and employees have already reached India in the wake of the agitations that have been going on in that country for months. On the other hand, the Center has advised those who want to go to Bangladesh to stop their travel. The Center has advised the Indians not to go to Bangladesh till further announcement from them.
