Bridge Collapse | Another bridge collapsed in Bihar. One side of the cable-stayed bridge being built over the Ganga River, which is said to be a dream project of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has been washed away in the Kooli River. But luckily no one was hurt. It is noteworthy that this is the third time that this bridge, which has been under construction for the past nine years, has collapsed. As this bridge is repeatedly collapsing while under construction, many questions are being raised about the quality of the construction and the project.

People are expressing their dissatisfaction as this cable-stayed bridge, which is the CM’s dream project, is collapsing one after another. Concern is being expressed that its construction, which started in 2014, is still not completed. People are impatient as they do not know when the construction will be completed. Will this bridge be accessible to them? They are asking. On the other hand, SK Singla Construction Private Limited, the construction company responsible for the project, did not give any explanation about the bridge collapse.

This bridge is being built on the Ganga river connecting Khagaria and Bhagalpur (Sultanganj) districts of Bihar. It is a dream project of CM Nitish Kumar and is being constructed under the name of Sultanganj-Aguwani with a length of 3.1 km and four lanes at a cost of Rs.1,710 crore. Nitish Kumar laid the foundation stone for its construction in 2014. While the construction of this bridge is supposed to be completed by 2020, it is still not completed. On the other hand, this bridge has already collapsed twice while under construction.

The bridge collapsed for the first time on June 30, 2022. On the Bhagalpur side, the superstructure between pillars 5 and 6 collapsed and fell into the Ganges. Then last year (2023) on June 4, the bridge collapsed again. The portion between pillars 10 and 12 towards Khagaria was washed away in the Kuli river. This led to severe criticism of the Bihar government. The Nitish government responded immediately and took corrective measures. SK Singla Construction Pvt Ltd, which is constructing the bridge, has been fined. The bridge was ordered to be rebuilt at the company’s expense. Now that the bridge has collapsed once again, the locals are very doubtful about the quality of the material used in this bridge.
