Chris Gayle met Prime Minister Modi during Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness’ visit to India
New Delhi: West Indies cricket legend Chris Gayle met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the bilateral visit of Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
The former cricketer shared a video from his meeting with the Prime Minister on his social media on Wednesday, saying, “An honor to meet the Prime Minister of India @narendramodi. Jamaica to India with the hashtag “OneLove”.
In the video, Gayle can be seen greeting the Prime Minister with “Namaste”.
Holness arrived in New Delhi on Monday for a historic four-day visit, marking Jamaica’s first bilateral visit to India by a leader. The visit of the Jamaican Prime Minister, who came at the invitation of PM Modi, will continue till October 3.
“Chris Gayle is not just an icon in Jamaica; He is widely known, respected and adored in India for his cricket prowess.
“It is great to be here at the same time as him during our visit to India. I am also happy that Jamaican businessmen of Indian heritage have joined,” the Jamaican Prime Minister posted on ‘X’ after his arrival in India on Monday.
India and Jamaica share a deep bond rooted in strong cultural and historical ties, a shared colonial past, commitment to democratic values and a mutual passion for cricket.
Considered one of the most destructive batsmen, Gayle, often referred to as the ‘Universe Boss’, represented the West Indies in 103 Tests, 301 ODIs and 79 T20Is. He scored 7214 runs in Tests, 10480 runs in ODIs and 1899 runs in T20Is. He is the most successful T20 batsman in history with 14562 runs, including 22 centuries and 88 fifties in a 17-year career.
He holds many records and is known for hitting bowlers with his long sixes. With 15 Test centuries, Gayle is one of only four hitters in the World to have scored two triple centuries in Test matches.
Moreover, in the first game of the 2007 T20 World Cup, Gayle created cricket history by becoming the first player to score a century in a T20 international. Against South Africa in Johannesburg, he scored 117 off just 57 balls.
