End of Jagan brand liquor shops in AP
One of the most controversial and notoriously damaging implementations of former CM Jagan Mohan Reddy was the intractable liquor policy. As a part of that, all the liquor shops in the state were brought under the government and private liquor shops were left without a place.
That’s not all. After Jagan became CM, there were virtually endless complaints about the contaminated liquor sold in these new liquor shops. Poor quality liquor, exorbitant prices and the much-debated cash-only policy were major flaws of the past liquor policy.
However, the new NDA government in AP has finally taken key steps towards removing liquor shops set up by Jagan Mohan Reddy. According to the new notification issued by the AP government, tenders will be called from October 12 for new private liquor shops after canceling the old government-owned liquor shops.
Tenders for private liquor shops will be invited from today from October 1 to October 9. Each of these tenders is worth Rs. 2 lakhs and will be allotted to suitors following a lottery pick mechanism scheduled on October 11.
From October 12, 3396 private liquor shops will open in Andhra Pradesh and after that all the old liquor bottles from the Jagan government will be returned to the AP Excise Department. All contaminated liquor is removed from the grid and quality liquor is released into circulation.
Based on geography and local population, the cost of a new liquor license ranges from Rs. Licensing fee has been increased drastically under the new system which may be in the range of 50-85 lakhs.
