Himachal Pradesh was hit by heavy rains and became the wettest state with 135 road closures.
Himachal Pradesh is reeling from incessant heavy rains which have caused landslides and floods across the state, severely affecting daily life. The rains closed 135 roads, disrupted water and electricity supplies and affected a large area, according to the government’s emergency operations center.
According to the latest data, extreme weather conditions existed in 44 energy projects and 67 water projects. To deal with the current crisis, the meteorological office on Saturday issued an orange warning for heavy rain with thunder and lightning. The warning also includes a yellow warning for heavy rain, which is expected to last until August 16.
The worst-hit town was Nahan in Sirmore district, which received a staggering 168.3mm of rain since Friday evening. Heavy rains also occurred in other areas such as Sandol, Nagruta Suryan and Jobarhati, where 106.4 mm of rain fell. The weather department has expressed concern over the possibility of mild to moderate flooding in isolated areas of Mandi, Sirmore, Shimla and Kullu districts, saying the threat will continue till Sunday morning.
The situation remains critical and authorities are taking precautionary measures to protect the public. Amarjit Singh, deputy commissioner of Hamirpur district, which is under orange alert, urged people to stay away from rivers and streams and not to seek shelter under trees in bad weather. The aim of this recommendation is to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of residents in dangerous situations.
The state has already experienced the devastating effects of monsoons. Heavy rains from June 27 to August 9 killed more than 100 people. The estimated financial loss of 842 million for the period is also noteworthy. The government and local authorities are closely monitoring the situation and rescue and relief operations are underway in the affected areas.
