The Sharannavaratra festival is going on with grandeur on Vijayawada Indrakiladri. As a part of this, Goddess Jaganmata Kanaka Durgamma, who is standing on the hill, is appearing as Durga Devi on the 8th day of Nizh Aswayuja Shuddha Ashtami. Adishakti killed the demon Durga. That is why Adi Shakti is called Mother Durga. Temple history says that Goddess Durga herself appeared on Keeladri after killing the demon. Devotees consider Goddess Durga to be the embodiment of Mahashakti who averts evils. Devotees believe that worshiping this goddess with red flowers, wearing a golden crown and holding a trident, will remove all sufferings.
Goddess Durga appears as if she is trampling Mahishasura under her feet. On this day, garelu, kadambam (cooked with vegetables and rice), jaggery and payasam are offered as offerings to Amma. Devotees also celebrate Durgashtami on this day. Devotees flock in large numbers to have a glimpse of Goddess Durga. Yesterday Durga Mata Saraswati appeared to the devotees in her adornment. Sri Mahishasura will appear as Mardini Devi tomorrow on the ninth day.
