Wayanad Landslide: A tragedy has taken place in the state of Kerala. Hundreds of people have been trapped in landslides in several areas near Meppadi in the state’s Wayanad district. The incident took place at one o’clock after midnight. While more than 20 people died in this accident, the locals claim that hundreds of people are trapped under the mounds. On receiving the information, the Kerala State Disaster Management Force, firemen, NDRF teams and local people took up rescue operations. Officials reached the spot and shifted the injured to local hospitals for treatment. It seems that hundreds of people are trapped under the landslides. Local officials said the death toll is likely to rise.

Kerala state has been receiving heavy rains for the past few days. Five dead bodies were found in Meppadi Mundakai area. Hundreds of vehicles were washed away here. Many houses were destroyed. As it has been raining for a few days, a rehabilitation center has been set up in a school for the locals. Along with that school building, many houses got stuck in the mud. Locals are worried that many people are trapped in it. Currently, heavy rains are falling in the area and the relief efforts are being disrupted. Many people are still missing. The family members are worried about this. A helicopter is being used for rescue operations. 16 people are receiving treatment in a private hospital in Meppadi.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan reacted to the tragic incident in Mundakai. He said that government agencies and other machinery are engaged in relief operations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on landslide incident X responded through the account. The Prime Minister expressed shock over the landslides in some parts of Wayanad district. My thoughts are with the family members of those who were injured and lost their lives in the accident. Relief efforts are ongoing. Modi said that he spoke to Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan and said that he will provide necessary help from the Centre. On the other hand, the Prime Minister’s Office has announced a compensation of 2 lakhs for the dead and 50 thousand for the injured.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi responded. I was in agony after a massive landslide near Meppadi in Wayanad. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families. Hope those still trapped will be brought to safe places soon. I spoke to Kerala Chief Minister and Wayanad District Collector. He said that relief efforts are ongoing. I asked him to ensure coordination with all agencies, set up a control room and inform us about any assistance required for relief operations. I will also talk to the central ministers and request them to provide all possible assistance to Wayanad. Rahul Gandhi said that I request all UDF workers to help the administration in rescue and relief operations.
