Lionel Messi returns to Inter Miami after two months out with injury
Washington: Lionel Messi is set to return to action for Inter Miami this weekend after more than two months on the sidelines due to injury.
The 37-year-old Argentina captain missed the Copa América final in July in Albiceleste’s 1-0 win over Colombia after injuring an ankle ligament.
But he has returned to full training and will almost certainly be called up for Inter Miami’s home clash with Philadelphia on Saturday, Xinhua reported.
“Yes, he is fine,” Inter Miami manager Gerardo Martino told reporters on Friday.
“He’s trained [on Thursday] And he is in our plans for the match. We will think about the strategy for him after training today, but he is available.
Messi has 12 goals and 13 assists in 12 MLS matches this season.
Martino is unfazed by the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner’s lack of match fitness, with his presence a big boost for the Florida outfit.
“We are delighted to welcome back the best player in the World for our team which is already on a good run,” said Martino.
Inter Miami currently leads Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference standings with 59 points from 27 matches, eight points clear of second-place Cincinnati.
