MUDA Scam: Karnataka Governor Thawarchand Gehlot’s approval to investigate CM Siddaramaiah on the Mysore City Development Authority (MUDA) scam is creating a stir in the state’s politics. In the past, the CMs were arrested in many cases where the Governor had given permission to investigate the CMs. Now there are speculations that Siddaramaiah will also be arrested. Now let’s know about the CMs who were arrested in the past as the Governor allowed the investigation.
Lalu Prasad Yadav
In 1997, then Bihar CM Lalu Prasad Yadav was accused of being involved in fodder scam. The opposition criticized it severely. As the case reached the High Court, there was a demand for a CBI investigation. In the wake of the great confusion, the then Governor of Bihar, AR Kidwai, gave permission to register a case against Lalu Yadav. Later, the CBI started investigating the case. After investigation CBI arrested then CM Lalu. So Lalu made his wife Rabri Devi sit on the CM’s chair.
BS Yeddyurappa
BS Yeddyurappa was the Chief Minister of Karnataka in 2011. At the same time Lokayukta led by Santosh Hegde accused Yeddyurappa of corruption. Yeddyurappa alleges illegal allotment of lands. The then Governor of Karnataka, Hansraj Bharadwaj, gave permission to investigate Yeddyurappa. This decision taken by Hansraj was widely criticized at that time. The Lokayukta Court issued arrest warrants for Yeddyurappa. Yeddyurappa was arrested in October 2011. He gave up the post of Chief Minister. Yeddyurappa spent 23 days in jail in this case. Later CBI took over this case.
Arvind Kejriwal
In 2022, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena Kejriwal handed over the probe into the government’s liquor policy to the CBI. The CBI first interrogated the then Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia in this case. In October 2022, ED along with CBI arrested Sisodia. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was included as an accused by the ED while the case against Sisodia was going on. ED arrested Kejriwal in March 2024 after a long investigation. Later CBI also took Kejriwal into custody from Tihar Jail. But Kejriwal did not resign from the post of CM.
Madhu Koda
In 2006, independent MLA Madhu Koda became the Chief Minister of Jharkhand with the support of Congress and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha parties. Koda’s government continued smoothly for 2 years. After that there were allegations of mining scam against CM Madhukoda. He was accused of committing irregularities of around Rs.400 crores in the allocation of coal mines. The then Governor Sibte Rizvi wrote a letter to the CBI to investigate Madhukoda. When the CBI started its investigation, it found evidence of money laundering. In 2009, CBI and ED jointly started investigation in Koda case. Koda was arrested by the CBI during the investigation. He remained in jail till 2012. He was convicted in this case in 2017. Currently Madhu Koda’s wife is in politics.
Will Siddaramaiah be arrested?
Governor Thawarchand Gehlot has given permission to interrogate Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah on the Muda scam. There are chances of registering a case against him and arresting him. Karnataka Deputy CM DK Sivakumar commented that there is a conspiracy against Siddaramaiah. He accused the BJP of conspiring to topple the government by sending Siddaramaiah to jail. Currently, CM Siddaramaiah is taking legal advice. On the other hand, the Karnataka government is likely to challenge the Governor’s decision in court.
