New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote a heartfelt letter thanking javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra’s mother Saroj Devi for her ‘Churma’. Ahead of Neeraj’s successful campaign at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where the star athlete bagged a silver medal, his mother promised to prepare a special churma for PM Modi after he expressed his desire to taste the delicacy.

After eating the home-cooked dish, PM Modi could not contain himself and wrote a letter to his mother expressing his heartfelt gratitude for the gesture. In his letter to Sarojadevi, Prime Minister Modi wrote, ‘Aaj is churma ko khane ke bad aapko patra likhne se khood ko rok na saka (After eating churma I could not stop myself from writing this letter to you)’.

“Neeraj (Chopra) bhai and I often discuss this churma, but I got emotional after taking it. This loving gift reminds me of my mother,” said PM Modi. PM Modi also said that this special gesture reminded him of his mother.

In a letter addressed to Sarojadevi, PM Modi further wrote, “Mother is an epitome of courage, love and dedication. Coincidentally I got this meal a day before Navratri. I fast for 9 navratri days.

Professionally, Neeraj won a silver medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 and a gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games. He also won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2021 and his last outing was at the Diamond League final on September 14, 2024, where he finished second with a throw of 87.86 meters.
