Pakistan | Rainy brides.. Child marriages in Pakistan for fear of floods!

  • Dilapidated conditions after 2022 floods
  • Families are devastated by the loss of financial security
  • Parents marrying off their daughters for money

Pakistan | Islamabad: The effect of floods in Pakistan in 2022 is still haunting people. Economic insecurity caused by climate change is throwing the lives of girl children into a whirlwind of problems. Farmers are afraid of heavy rains, floods, landslides and crop losses during July-September. They are marrying off their minor daughters for the financial security of their family. They take about Rs.2 lakhs from men who are twice their age and marry them off.

Monsoon Brides..

Floods in 2022 inundated three-quarters of Pakistan. The Sindh region has not yet recovered from this impact. Mashook, the founder of an organization fighting against child marriage, said that this started the trend of ‘monsoon brides’. Some parents are marrying off their minor daughters by taking money from the men’s families. Village head Khan Mohammad Mallah said that 45 minor girls have been married in their village since the last rainy season.

Back to birth..

Parents say that they are marrying off their children to save them from poverty. On the other hand, many of the minor girls who are married in childhood are deprived of livelihood. Frustrated with the husband’s lack of employment and not taking care of their entertainment, they are returning to their native place along with their husband and children. This doubles the difficulties of the parents.
