New Delhi/Kolkata, August 17: Doctors and medical staff across the country are worried about the incident of sexual assault and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata. A 24-hour strike was held on Saturday. Due to this, the medical services were paralyzed. In all the states, doctors, medical students and staff boycotted their duties and took up agitation. Medical services like OP and dispensary have stopped in many dispensaries due to strike of doctors.
The doctors continued the activities of the ICU, emergency department and operation theaters without causing any trouble to the public. Three letters were received to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice DY Chandrachud, asking him to conduct a suo moto inquiry into the Kolkata incident. Meanwhile, the police have registered a case against a doctor named JJ Jazeera for allegedly displaying his licensed gun during a doctors’ protest in Amreli, Gujarat.
Protests in UK and Bangladesh
Protests were also held abroad against the Kolkata incident. Indian doctors and medical students in the UK staged a peaceful protest in front of India House in London. Students protest at Dhaka University in Bangladesh.
Cease protests: Centre
The Central Medical Department responded to the concerns of the doctors. On Saturday, the representatives of Federation of Resident Doctors Association and Indian Medical Association met with the officials of the Central Medical Department. The doctors’ associations put five demands before the Centre. The Central Medical Department said that a committee will be set up to consult on these demands. He asked to stop the protests.
Transfers of doctors during protests
The state government’s decision to transfer 42 doctors has become a controversy when protests continue across West Bengal over the killing of a junior doctor. The medical associations alleged that the doctors who were actively participating in the protests were transferred to quell the agitation.
