Visakhapatnam: Strict action against errant school transport companies
Visakhapatnam: The District Transport Commissioner (DTC) has seized four school buses and 12 school vehicles in Visakhapatnam for violating safety norms. Visakhapatnam Deputy Transport Commissioner Raja Ratnam said in an interview to DC on Monday, “Since June 13, 2024, 86 cases of vandalism have been reported in schools and colleges and nine buses and five cars have been impounded. “
The seizure was made as part of a special search operation conducted in various areas including Anandapuram, Benduruthy, Veppagunda, Naval Armament Depot, Matillapalam, Gambhiram and Boyapalam. Rathinam said weekly inspections will be carried out to ensure compliance with safety regulations. The most frequently broken rule is sitting too much. “For passenger cars, the maximum capacity is six children and depends on the capacity of the buses. School management is responsible for ensuring proper documentation and background checks on drivers and putting children’s safety first,” Ratnam added.
