Wayanad : The death toll in the Wayanad disaster is increasing.. Relief efforts are ongoing

Wayanad Landslides: A disaster created by nature in Wayanad district of Kerala state has destroyed many families. The number of dead is increasing in the landslides due to heavy rains and razing the villages to the ground. NDRF, KSDRF, Army, Navy and Air Force personnel are engaged in relief operations. As of Friday morning, the death toll has reached 316. Among the dead were 27 children and 76 women. The whereabouts of 220 people are still unknown.

Relief operations have been going on in Meppadi, Mundakai, Churalmala, Attamala and Nool Puja areas in Wayanad district for four days. On Friday, more speed was increased in relief operations. As the debris is cleared, the death toll is increasing. More than a thousand personnel are participating in the relief programs. Army has successfully completed construction of 190 feet Bailey Bridge between Churalmala โ€“ Mundakkai in record time. Construction of the Bailey Bridge was completed by 5:30 PM on Thursday, starting at 9:00 PM on Wednesday. Army rescue operation is currently going on at Attamala and Mundakkai Churalmala. Major General VT Mathew is supervising the Army’s rescue operations in Wayanad.

It becomes difficult for the family members to identify the dead bodies brought from the Chaliyar river. The bodies were found in the Chaliyar river in Nilambur, 25 km from the landslide area. Support workers are removing mud and debris with procleaners and JCBs. Boulders are broken and dead bodies are recovered. NDRF personnel are identifying the missing people stuck in the mud with modern technical equipment. US President Joe Biden has expressed deep grief over the tragic incident in Wayanad.
